Yesterday was another "Jer-out" day as we call it. Jer-out = Pig-out because Jerome is a pig. HAHAHA. My CX friends and I have been pigging out since, shet, a month ago, and we've been having Jer-out days once a week since then.
So we had lunch at Banapple (again) in Katipunan (their cakes are love) then Jer, Jay, Grace, and I went to Eastwood to watch The Strangers.
The Strangers was just the second movie I've seen in the Eastwood Cinemas; the first being Tropic Thunder. You know me, I love horror films, particularly the slasher subgenre. And since according to reviews, those looking for cheap scares won't find it in this movie, I got more eager to see The Strangers on the big screen.
Lesson learned: Never watch movies that (you feel that) you really like in the Eastwood Cinemas. PUNYETA. Puro estudyanteng kaiingay. Damn them. Bwisit. Kaaarte. Putangina. At galit talaga ako nyan o.
Let me detach the bad cinema experience from the movie at this point.
The movie wasn't great, but it was ok. It was likeable, but not exactly unforgettable. Not something that would make my Favorite Movies list. It didn't even distinguish itself from other suspense movies or slasher films. Although, unlike your usual slasher, The Strangers did away with the constant bloodbath. What made me like it was the way it was filmed. Commendable editing, I must say, since it delivered the feel that the movie was trying to project.
The cut-to's and the way that the director conveniently hid the killers' faces when they took off the masks added the creepier feel. The panning and the cut-to's will make you lose your sense of direction of the set, which enabled the movie to constantly deliver gulat scenes. This was the kind of movie that will make you instinctively shift your focus on the background instead of the foreground. Sounds were effectively disturbing as well, especially the one on the trailer.
I must have a thing for masked killers. They entertain me better and give me the creeps more. Think Scream, Valentine, Halloween... They just have this evil to them that would make you cry once they take of their masks if you translate these events in real life.
O pero yung The Strangers, isang oras yatang walang nangyayari sa movie. But when the masked killers showed up, they kept appearing every*effin*where. The plot probably revolved around hate crime, so they didn't have to have any reason for stalking Liv Tyler and her guy. The masked killers barely talked, but when they did, you'd just want to die right then and there.
Tipong:
Dollface: Is Tamara there?
Liv: You already came here earlier.
Dollface: Are you sure?
Liv: Why are you doing this?
Dollface: Because you're home.
Mormon Kid: Are you a sinner?
Dollface: Sometimes.
Those lines and the fact that the killers' motive wasn't revealed are what made me like the movie. There was no twist but there was no closure either. And I liked that the movie urged me to scan the background first, before turning my attention to the foreground. And I loved the gulat scenes, which would have entertained me more, had I watched the movie at home or somewhere more quiet. Parang tanga nga lang yung naglagay pa sila ng "This movie was inspired by true events." To hell with that! Parang masabi lang na inspired by "true events." (whooooo!!! wag ka na!!) The movie was entertaining, nonetheless. But I just realized that slasher films (nowadays) no longer scare me. Mas nakakatakot yung may mental play. Though, of course, I've nothing against movies whose foundation are blood and gore.
After the movie that ended at around 6pm, Jer, Grace and I stayed in Eastwood until around 10pm. HAHAHA. Imagine, tambay, chika and lafang galore talaga! We pledged not to eat anymore nung nag-aya akong mag-Yellow Cab at ayaw nila.
Long talks with good friends over food ay love talaga.
Til next Jer-out day.
